Washington, D.C.—September 23, 2013—1776 today announced an agreement that will bring Microsoft Ventures resources to the world’s most promising startups in the heart of Washington, D.C., supporting them through collaboration and mentorship.
Opened in April, 2013, the 1776 Campus includes co-working and mentorship programs for hundreds of startups and an events venue that has rapidly become the center of gravity for the DC startup community. With an emphasis on startups involved in education, energy, healthcare and government, 1776 members get access to the political, intellectual, social, and financial capital that make Washington, D.C. unique.
While the Microsoft BizSpark program will be providing software, support, and access to critical development tools for the startups, Microsoft Ventures will play a strategic role in helping startups focused on business growth and which are in need of accelerators, community engagement and seed funding. Along with providing consistent access to Microsoft technical resources and devices, startups engaged across the 1776 global platform will also have the opportunity to qualify for additional benefits via the BizSpark Plus program where startups qualify for a rich set of offers including Office 365 and Azure.
“Through their deep domain expertise and vibrant partner ecosystem, Microsoft Ventures has an excellent ability to give startups an avenue to potential customers across the globe,” said Donna Harris, cofounder of 1776. “We’re thrilled to be one of their US-based accelerator partners as they roll out this coordinated global initiative.”
Cliff Reeves, who leads the Microsoft Ventures Community team, noted “entrepreneurism is a local phenomenon everywhere, and the 1776 Campus represents the best of DC. We see 1776 as an essential way to find and work with the great startups in the area.”
1776 is a platform to reinvent America by connecting the hottest startups from around the world with the assets of the most powerful city on Earth. In the heart of Washington, D.C., just a few blocks from the White House, 1776 is where startups tackling major national challenges in education, energy, health care, government, and all other highly regulated industries can engage to build the future of our economy.
